Supreme Court Nominee must be a Health Care Advocate
WASHINGTON, DC — Earlier today, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement. President Biden and the United States Senate face a crucial and extraordinary opportunity – to nominate and confirm a justice that will protect health care in America, rather than threaten to take it away.
Health Care Voter Executive Director Laura Packard gave the following statement:
“President Biden must appoint – and the U.S. Senate must confirm – a justice with a strong history of defending the Affordable Care Act, especially considering the hostile treatment of health care by right wing members of the Court. Recently, the Supreme Court struck down OSHA’s vaccine-or-test mandate for large employers, prolonging the pandemic and putting millions of American lives at risk. They will soon issue an opinion that could gut Roe v. Wade, jeopardizing the reproductive health care rights of people across the country.
Justice Breyer’s legacy of protecting the right to an abortion and safeguarding our health care must be upheld with this new Justice. We urge President Biden and the U.S. Senate to advance a nominee who embodies Justice Breyer’s commitment to defending our access to quality and affordable health care.”
