SCOTUS Upholds ACA, Delivering A Victory for Health Care That Americans Shouldn’t Have to Celebrate

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, dismissed the plaintiff’s claim in California v. Texas. The Court held that the state of Texas has no standing to challenge the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act, leaving the law in place. This means millions of Americans will be able to maintain access to quality, affordable health care, including the more than 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions whose livelihoods depend on coverage provided through the ACA.

Health Care Voter Spokesperson Anushka Sarkar released the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision strengthens the viability of the Affordable Care Act more than 11 years after its passage. While the fight for affordable and accessible health care is not over, we hope to continue the momentum from this decision in an effort to make sure every American has high-quality health care coverage.

We’ve already seen this administration take steps in that direction by reopening the health care marketplace and expanding subsidies as we continue to fight the pandemic. With this decision, we hope Republicans will end their dangerous political games and finally acknowledge that giving people health care is a good thing.”
