Health Care Voter Chair Laura Packard, President Obama Discuss Eleven Years of Quality, Affordable Health Care Thanks to the Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON, D.C.
— Today marks 11 years since President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law.  Since the health care law’s signing, millions of Americans have seen real improvements in their health outcomes.

Moreover, in just two weeks since President Biden reopened the ACA marketplaces, more than 200,000 Americans have
enrolled in ACA health care plans—proof that the law continues to massively expand access to quality, affordable health care.

WATCH: Protect Our Care hosts Health Care Voter Co-Chair Laura Packard, President Obama in conversation about 11 years of the ACA.

“I’m here today because the Affordable Care Act saved my life. Four years ago [in 2017], I walked into a doctor’s office with a nagging cough, and walked out with a stage four cancer diagnosis. Without the ACA, I never could have afforded the six months of chemotherapy and months of radiation it took for me to be in remission today. I used to have junk insurance—if I still had that insurance, today I would be bankrupt or dead,”
Packard shared. “The day after my first chemotherapy, Republicans in the U.S. House [of Representatives] voted to dismantle the ACA and strip away the care that was keeping me alive. Not only did I have to fight cancer, but also the president and Congress, just to stay alive. Thankfully, we won. One-hundred thirty-five million Americans with preexisting conditions like me got to keep our health care. And many of the people responsible for threatening our care are no longer in office today.”
