Democrats Continue Delivering on Health Care Promises, Introduce Legislation to Lower Drug Prices Through Medicare

WASHINGTON, D.C.
— Today, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT) introduced legislation that expands Medicare’s power to negotiate drug prices directly with pharmaceutical companies and lower prescription drug prices for millions of Americans. Health Care Voter has been a staunch advocate for Medicare negotiations, supporting H.R. 3 during the 116th Congress—a similar piece of legislation that was passed by House Democrats but died in Mitch McConnell’s legislative graveyard.

Health Care Voter spokesperson Anushka Sarkar responded to the announcement:

“With their new Senate majority, the reintroduction of Medicare negotiation legislation is proof that Democrats are hard at work delivering on their promises to lower prescription drug prices. Expanding Medicare’s power to negotiate on behalf of millions of Americans is good policy, good politics, and necessary for our country’s recovery from COVID. With the long-term health effects and economic uncertainty left by COVID, our road to recovery must include lowering drug prices—this is an overwhelmingly popular means of doing so.”
