Biden’s American Families Plan Must Lower Prescription Drug Prices, A Top Priority for for Millions of Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C.
— Today, President Biden released the details of the American Families Plan, a proposal of New Deal-era scale slated to make historic, people-first investments. Notably missing among its many provisions, however, is the Lower Drug Costs Now Act (H.R. 3). The missing legislation expands Medicare’s power to directly negotiate prices of medicines with drug manufacturers, thereby drastically lowering prescription drug prices for millions of Americans.

Health Care Voter Co-Chair Laura Packard responded to the plan’s release:

“President Biden and Vice President Harris promised the American people they would lower prescription drug prices. The administration must expand Medicare’s power to do exactly that, by whatever means necessary. This is a universally popular and bipartisan issue. Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly believe the government must lower drug prices urgently, and the need is even greater as we move our economic recovery forward.

The last year has revealed just how urgent the crisis of skyrocketing prescription drug prices really is. While the COVID death toll mounted, millions of Americans rationed or went without lifesaving medicines because they simply could not afford them. If Joe Biden wants to be the health care president he promised he would be, this is his chance to make good on that promise.”
