Biden Plan for Lowering Drug Prices is a Step in the Right Direction

WASHINGTON, DC — Yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services released a plan to lower the cost of prescription drugs as part of President Biden’s “Promoting Competition in the American Economy” Executive Order. The plan encourages Congress to take bold legislative actions that would allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices, a focal point of Health Care Voter’s mission. It also supports more competition within the pharmaceutical industry, along with promoting research and innovation efforts to help identify new and more affordable treatments. This release comes as the House Committee on Energy and Commerce prepares to markup their portion of the Build Back Better Act, which must include H.R.3 Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act.

Health Care Voter Executive Director Laura Packard gave the following statement:

“The new Biden administration plan to lower the cost of prescription drugs is an important and necessary step toward making health care more affordable for all Americans. Price gouging by Big Pharma has got to stop. In the richest country in the world, no one should be forced to forgo life-saving medication because they can’t afford it. This plan is a win-win that will help put more money into the pockets of working families, and save Americans hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade. Now it’s time for Congress to make sure these measures are fully included in the reconciliation package.”
